Each month at Lord of Life members have an opportunity to financially support a “Benevolence”. According to the dictionary, a benevolence is an act of kindness that serves a charitable rather than a profit-making purpose. This giving is outside our giving to support the facilities, staff and programs at Lord of Life. There is a different benevolence supported each month. The following is a summary of the benevolences currently supported by Lord of Life.
Lord of Life Preschool
Our preschool serves as a ministry to the children and families of Lord of Life and the surrounding community. The goal of the preschool program is for each child to recognize their worth as a person, build self-confidence, and know how much God loves them. Gifts given this month help to provide a children's Bible to each student at the end of the school year.
AFSP is the nation’s leading organization bringing together people across communities and backgrounds to understand and prevent suicide, and to help heal the pain it causes. Individuals, families, and communities who have been personally touched by suicide are the moving force behind everything we do.
Pine Lake Academy
This school is located in Kodera, Kenya. Several years ago the LOL Sunday School children decided to designate their Sunday school offerings to sponsor four students at the school. The offering each summer from Vacation Bible School also goes to support these four children. For $300 per year each student receives two meals a day, school uniforms, books and supplies and most importantly an education. The Sunday school and VBS offerings alone are no longer sufficient to support these children so the LOL congregation voted in 2015 to have it added as a Benevolence of the Month.
Good Samaritan Fund
This fund is used to assist our church family and others in our local community in times of need. The fund is entirely supported by your donations and is administered by a small committee at Lord of Life, including the Pastor. If you have questions or a need, please don't hesitate to speak with the Pastor.
Gift of Grace is Lord of Life's sister congregation in many ways. Working with Pastor Jami Fecher, Lord of Life was instrumental in forming Gift of Grace 18 years ago. Gift of Grace Congregation originated the Grace Feast ministry which Lord of Life has emulated and grought to Renton. Gift of Grace has committed itself to ministry with the homeless and less fortunate. Now, Lord of Life has an opportunity to partner yet again with this unique and powerful sister congregation.
Luther’s Table in downtown Renton is a satellite ministry of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, supported by the ELCA and NW WA Synod and looks like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It is a coffee shop/bakery by day and a music venue/pub by night. Luther’s Table is built around the idea that community, conversation, trust and faith are found around the table. Following Christ’s example of eating and drinking with people, walking alongside them in their lives and on their journey of faith, it creates community among those for whom church is a challenge, an offense, or just not for them. It widens the walls of the church, models moderation and teaches through example that we are sinners, but by the grace of God we are also saints. Luther’s Table is experimenting with grace to see how far it can really go.
Grace Feast is a part of important work in downtown Renton to offer a hot meal to those who are hungry. LOL partners with 2 other churches to feed the homeless and less fortunate one Sunday a month.
Lord of Life Scholarship Fund
For over 30 years the Lord of Life congregation has been supporting the development of our youth through the Lord of Life Scholarship Program. Each year the number of scholarships and the amount varies depending on the number of applicants and the funds available. To date nearly 170 scholarships have been awarded. As a result of the generosity of the congregation and the thoughtful stewardship of the committee, scholarship amounts have slowly risen over the years and the funds held for the future have been maintained or increased each year. With generous contributions we can send our Lord of Life youth out into the world with the support of their church.
LWR is a non-profit organization that works with local partners to provide lasting solutions to poverty, injustice and human suffering around the world. In 2014, LWR helped 4,763,599 people in 35 countries via 153 projects. LOL assists in this effort by making quilts and donating items for and assembling baby care kits and backpacks of school supplies.
Center of Hope and Vision House provide housing and resources for women and children in Renton. Center of Hope helps for the time of waiting between requesting housing and finding placement into a program. Vision House provides housing and resources for up to two years.
This agency provides housing, shelter and support services to people experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Puget Sound region. LOL makes and donates approx. 40 quilts a year to the Renton housing complex.
You can make a difference! The education of a Massai girl is an amazing transformation. The small, shy, pastoralist girl becomes the young, confident educated woman. She is ready to face the world and contribute to her family and community. Some graduates return home, some enter colleges, universities or vocational schools and others seek employment. All have been transformed by their education at the MaaSae Girls Lutheran Secondary School.
